What Does an SMS Text Message Mean? What SMS Stands For & the Difference Between SMS and MMS
What does SMS mean in a text message? SMS stands for Short Message Service: a plain text message of up to 160 characters, sent over a mobile carrier's network rather than the internet. It is what most people simply call a text. For a business, it is the one channel that reaches a customer's phone without an app, an account or a data connection.
In short
- SMS means Short Message Service: plain text, 160 characters per message, delivered by carriers.
- MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) adds pictures, audio or video, and costs more to send.
- In everyday speech, "text" and "SMS" mean the same thing.
- Business texting needs opt-in, your business name, STOP wording and, in the US, an approved A2P 10DLC registration.
- Text messaging is not social media. It is a carrier service with no feed, no followers and no algorithm.
What does SMS mean in a text message?
An SMS text is the basic text message: letters, numbers, punctuation and emoji, and nothing else. When someone says "text message SMS", they are naming the same thing twice. "Text message" is the everyday name and "SMS" is the technical one, so if a vendor's price sheet says SMS, it means ordinary texts. Anything heavier, such as a photo or a video, travels as MMS instead (more on that below).
What does SMS stand for?
SMS stands for Short Message Service. The "short" is literal: one message holds 160 standard characters. Longer texts are split into several parts, called segments, and each segment is billed. That is worth knowing before you write a 400-character promotion.
Is SMS the same as a text?
In conversation, yes. People say "text" for anything that lands in their phone's messaging app. Strictly speaking, though, there is a difference between SMS and text. "Text" is a loose label, while SMS is one specific carrier technology. A message in your default app might be an SMS, an MMS, an RCS chat or an iMessage. All of them look like texts, but only the first is SMS. For a business, the difference shows up in cost, reach and rules: carrier SMS is billed and regulated, while app-based chats are not.
What does text messaging mean?
Text messaging means sending short written messages to a phone number, not to an account on an app. That matters to you as a sender: the person receiving it does not need to install anything, and you do not need their email address.
Text messaging definition
A simple definition of text messaging: it is a store-and-forward service between phones. The network accepts your message, holds it if the phone is off, and delivers it when the phone reconnects. That is why a text can arrive hours late to someone who had no signal.
How does text messaging work?
Here is the path a message takes when you send one, whether from Linxi or from a phone:
If step 3 fails, the message is filtered or dropped. That is the most common reason a business text never arrives.
When was text messaging invented?
Text messaging was invented as part of the GSM mobile standard in the 1980s, and the first text was sent on 3 December 1992. Engineer Neil Papworth typed "Merry Christmas" on a computer and sent it to a colleague's phone on the Vodafone network in the UK.
When did text messaging begin?
Texting began as a side feature of mobile networks, meant for operators to send short service notices to phones. Early phones could receive these messages but could not easily send them. Person-to-person texting came a little later, once phones had keypads that made typing practical.
When did text messaging become popular?
Texting became popular in the late 1990s and the 2000s. Three things drove it: networks began carrying each other's messages, prepaid phones gave teenagers cheap access, and phones got easier to type on.
SMS vs MMS: what's the difference?
What is MMS text messaging?
MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service. It lets a text carry a picture, a short video or audio, with a longer body than SMS allows. Carriers charge more for it because it uses more capacity.
The difference between SMS and MMS messages
In short, SMS is text only and MMS carries media. SMS reaches any phone and costs less, while MMS depends on the phone and costs more.
One honest note about Linxi today: you can attach an image to a campaign and it is stored with the campaign, but campaigns do not send it yet. Plan your campaigns as text. Current prices are on the pricing page.
What does "only send SMS and MMS messages" mean?
It is a notice some messaging apps show when a conversation is going through the carrier instead of a data-based chat. It means the app will only send SMS and MMS messages, so no read receipts, typing indicators or high-quality media. The wording varies by phone and app, so check your own device's settings if you see it.
Text message types and formats
Types of text messaging
The main types of text messaging you will meet:
- SMS: plain text, 160 characters per segment.
- MMS: text plus images, audio or video.
- RCS: a newer, data-based chat standard on Android phones and, since iOS 18 in 2024, on iPhones.
- App-to-app chat: iMessage, WhatsApp, Messenger. These are not carrier texts.
- Linxi Network messages: direct messages between Linxi accounts, with no carrier involved.
Text message formats and length
The format of a text comes down to its characters and its length. Standard letters and numbers fit 160 to a single message. A message with even one emoji or non-Latin character is sent in a different format that holds only 70. Longer messages are split into segments, and each segment loses a few characters to the label that stitches them back together.
Keep promotional texts to one segment when you can, and leave emoji out of long ones.
Is text messaging social media?
No. Social media runs on platforms with profiles, feeds and algorithms deciding who sees what. Texting is a direct line to a phone number. Nothing is ranked, and a delivered text is nearly always seen. That is the main reason businesses use it alongside their social channels.
How to remove SMS messages from Messenger
Facebook Messenger stopped handling texts on Android in 2023, so any texts you still see in it are older ones. To remove them:
- Open your phone's default messaging app, which is where the texts actually live.
- Press and hold the conversation.
- Choose delete.
Menus differ by phone and app version, so look for the delete or archive option in your own app.
Text messaging lingo
Texting lingo is the shorthand people type to save characters. A few common ones:
- OMW: on my way.
- TY: thank you.
- IDK: I don't know.
- BRB: be right back.
In customer messages, plain words beat abbreviations. Your reader may not know the shorthand, and it can look careless coming from a business number.
What does FB mean in text messaging?
In most texts, FB means Facebook, as in "check your FB". Context decides it, and some people use it as slang for something else, so leave it out of business messages.
Mass text messaging for business
Mass text messaging is sending one message to many contacts at once, usually through a platform that handles the list, the scheduling and the carrier rules. Done right, it is a campaign. Done carelessly, it is spam.
Carriers expect the following on every SMS campaign:
- Only message people who opted in.
- Put your business name in the message.
- Include opt-out wording such as "Reply STOP to opt out".
- Avoid public link shorteners like bit.ly, and spam words such as "FREE" or "WINNER".
- Have your US A2P 10DLC registration approved first, or messages are filtered or dropped.
Check registration before you send
If your A2P registration is not approved, a campaign will not deliver. Anyone who texts STOP is excluded automatically and can never be messaged again on SMS.
Creative SMS messages that work
Creative does not mean clever. It means specific. Three examples of texts that work:
- Reminder: "Hi Sam, this is Harbor Dental. Your cleaning is tomorrow at 9:30. Reply STOP to opt out."
- Event: "Harbor Dental here: our open day is Saturday. Details on our site. Reply STOP to opt out."
- Follow-up: "Thanks for visiting Harbor Dental today. Questions? Just reply. Reply STOP to opt out."
- Business name firstThe reader knows who is texting before anything else.
- One specific pointA time, a day or a thank-you: never three things at once.
- STOP wording every timeCarriers expect it on every business text.
- One segmentEach sample fits in 160 characters, so it is billed once.
These are sample wording, not real customer messages.
Choosing a text messaging platform
Text messaging platforms differ in pricing and in what they bundle. Linxi sends at carrier cost with no markup, and puts SMS, email and Linxi Network in one composer where the three channels are checkboxes. The plans page compares the tiers, and the Help Center covers A2P setup step by step.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does SMS mean in texting?
SMS stands for Short Message Service: the plain text message every mobile phone can send and receive. It travels over the carrier's network rather than the internet, so it needs no app, no account and no data connection. When people say "text", they usually mean an SMS, even though some apps send other kinds of message that look the same.
How many characters is one SMS?
One standard SMS holds 160 characters. A longer message is split into segments of 153 characters each, because every segment gives up a few characters to the label that lets the phone stitch the parts back together, and each segment is billed. So a 320-character text costs three segments, not two. Add one emoji, or any character outside the basic set, and the limits drop to 70 for a single message and 67 per segment, which is why one emoji can more than double the cost of a long text.
What is MMS texting?
MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is the carrier service that sends pictures, short videos and audio by text, with a longer body than SMS allows. Group texts between some phones are also sent as MMS. It costs more than SMS: on Linxi, $0.0100 per message on Telnyx against $0.0040 for an SMS, and whether it displays well depends on the recipient's phone and settings.
What is the difference between SMS and RCS?
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a newer chat standard that sends messages over mobile data or Wi-Fi, with typing indicators, read receipts, high-quality photos and better group chats. It works in Google Messages on Android and, since iOS 18 in 2024, on iPhones. When either phone or network can't use RCS, the message falls back to plain SMS, which is why SMS is still the one format that reaches every phone.
Is email or text better for business messages?
They do different jobs, which is why Linxi lets one campaign use both. Email suits longer content, newsletters and anything with links or pictures, and it costs nothing on Linxi because it goes out on your own mailbox. SMS suits short, time-sensitive notices, like a reminder or a change of plan, because a text is usually read within minutes. Email needs a working unsubscribe and a physical address under CAN-SPAM, instead of STOP wording.
Is text messaging free?
For people, usually yes: most phone plans include unlimited texting, and chat apps use data rather than texts. For a business sending through a platform, every SMS has a carrier cost. On Linxi that is the carrier's own rate with no markup, $0.0040 per segment on Telnyx, and Linxi Network messages between Linxi accounts are free because no carrier is involved.
How do I block SMS messages?
On an iPhone, open the conversation, tap the sender's name or number at the top, then choose Block Caller. On Android in Google Messages, press and hold the conversation, then tap Block. Menus differ by phone and app version. For texts from a business, replying STOP is the faster route: a registered business sender must stop texting you.
How can I spot a scam text message?
Be wary of texts that create urgency, ask you to click a link, or ask for a code, a password or a payment, especially from a number you don't know. A real business names itself, and never asks you to send back a one-time code or a password. Don't tap the link; in the US you can forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) to report it to your carrier, then delete it.
Can a business send automatic replies to texts?
Yes. In Linxi, Linx can answer inbound texts automatically, but only where the account holder has switched automatic replies on; otherwise every reply waits for a person. Flow automations can also start when a contact replies to a campaign, or doesn't reply at all.
Do Linxi Network messages need STOP language?
No. Linxi Network messages are direct messages between Linxi accounts: they are not SMS, involve no carrier and carry no cost, so the SMS rules on STOP wording and A2P registration do not apply. Those rules cover SMS only, and email has its own rules (an unsubscribe and a physical address).
Can I text someone who replied STOP?
No. Anyone who texts STOP is excluded automatically and can never be messaged again on SMS. Someone who has opted out is never messaged on any channel from a campaign, so a STOP is respected everywhere at once, not just on the number it came from.
Why did my text not deliver?
For business traffic in the US, the usual cause is an A2P 10DLC registration that is not approved: carriers filter or drop texts from unregistered numbers, and Twilio error 30034 means exactly that. Other common causes are a landline or invalid number, a recipient who opted out, content carriers filter (such as public link shorteners), or a phone that is off, in which case the carrier holds the text and delivers it later. The Help Center explains each error code.
Send texts that carriers approve
Linxi puts SMS, email and Linxi Network in one place, at carrier cost. Check what each message costs on the pricing page, then open Linxi and build your first campaign.
