Best Second Phone Number App for Business: Free Business Phone Number Apps & Providers Compared
What is the best second phone number app for business? The best one is the app built for the job your second number will actually do. If it is mainly for calls, a business VoIP phone system or Google Voice is the usual pick. If it is mainly for texting customers, a texting platform with A2P registration built in will serve you better. And if you only want to keep your personal number private for a few weeks, a low-cost second-line app is enough. This guide compares the main kinds of apps, what "free" really includes, and the rules that decide whether your business texts arrive.
In short
- A second phone number app gives you a business number on the phone you already own, so your personal number stays private.
- There are five main kinds: Google Voice, business VoIP phone systems, consumer second-line apps, a second line from your carrier, and texting-first platforms.
- Pick by the number's main job: calling, texting or both, and whether a team will share it.
- "Free" usually means personal use, ads, a trial or limits. Business texting in the US also needs A2P 10DLC registration, which carries carrier fees on any app.
- Make sure you can port the number out later. The number is the asset; the app is replaceable.
Why get a second phone number for business?
A second phone number separates the business from your private life without carrying a second phone. Calls and texts to the business number arrive in an app, and your personal number never appears on a flyer, a website or a customer's phone.
The practical reasons people set one up:
- Privacy. Customers, vendors and strangers from your Google listing never get your personal number.
- Working hours. You can mute the business line after hours and still take calls from family.
- A number that outlives you in the role. If someone else takes over the front desk, the number goes with the job, not with a person's own phone.
- One record. Business conversations stay in one place, which helps when you need to look up what a customer was told.
- A professional look. A local area code, or a toll-free number, reads as an established business.
How a second phone number app works
Most second-number apps use VoIP (voice over internet protocol). The app's provider owns a real phone number and connects it to the public phone network. When someone calls or texts that number, the provider routes it over the internet to the app on your phone or computer.
Two things follow from that design. First, the app needs a data or Wi-Fi connection for most features, although some apps can fall back to forwarding calls to your regular number. Second, the number belongs to the provider's account, which is why the ability to port it (move it to another provider) matters so much when you choose.
Best second phone number app for business: the five kinds
No single app is best for every business. What matters is which kind of app you choose, so here are the five, with what each is good at and what to watch.
Google Voice
Google Voice gives you a US number that rings on your phone and computer, with voicemail transcription and texting. The personal version is free in the US and links to an existing US number. For business use, Google sells Google Voice for Google Workspace, which is charged per user on top of a Workspace subscription. It is a good fit for a solo owner or a small team already living in Google's apps. It is built for person-to-person calls and texts, not for mass texting campaigns. We cover Google's options in detail in our guide to business phone numbers on Google.
Business VoIP phone systems
RingCentral, Dialpad, Nextiva and Grasshopper are well-known examples. These are full phone systems: auto-attendants ("press 1 for sales"), call queues, extensions for each person, business-hours routing, call recording and desk-phone support. They are the strongest choice when calls are the heart of your business and several people answer the phone. They are priced per user per month, and texting features usually require A2P registration through the provider. Check each provider's current plans, because what is included changes.
Consumer second-line apps
Apps such as Line2, Burner, Hushed and TextNow give you an extra number quickly and cheaply, and some are free with ads. They are fine for a side project, a short-term listing or keeping your number off a marketplace. They are a weaker fit for a business you are building: limited or no team sharing, and some numbers can be reclaimed if you stop using them. They are also not designed for sending business texts at volume under US carrier rules.
A second line from your mobile carrier
Most current phones support two lines at once through a second SIM or an eSIM. Your carrier adds a second line, and your phone shows both. Call quality is that of a normal mobile line and it works without data. The trade-offs: it is tied to one physical phone, it is hard to share with a team, and texting customers at scale from it is not allowed under carrier rules for business messaging.
Texting-first business platforms
If the number's main job is to text customers (reminders, confirmations, follow-ups, promotions), a texting platform is the better tool. These put texts, contacts, opt-ins and campaigns in one place and handle carrier registration. Linxi is one of these, and there is an honest note on where it fits further down.
Best business phone number app: how to choose
Before comparing brands, answer a few questions about your own business. They narrow the field quickly.
Best app for business phone number if you mostly text
Look for: A2P 10DLC registration handled inside the app, a shared inbox, contact records with opt-in history, automatic handling of STOP and HELP, and clear per-message pricing. Delivery problems almost always come from registration, so an app that walks you through it, or files it for you, saves days.
Best apps for business phone number if you mostly call
Look for: call routing and business hours, voicemail with transcription, an auto-attendant if more than one person answers, apps for both phone and computer, and good call quality on your connection. Ask how texting works on the same number before you commit, because many calling apps add texting as an extra with its own registration steps.
Best business phone number apps for a team
If more than one person will answer the number, shared access is the deciding feature. Check whether the plan charges per user, whether two people can see the same conversation, and whether you can tell who replied. A number on one person's phone is not a team line.
Free business phone number app: what "free" really means
A free business phone number app almost always comes with a condition. The common ones:
- Personal-use terms. Google Voice is free for personal accounts. The business version is a paid Workspace add-on.
- Ads and limits. Free consumer apps are usually funded by ads, or limit minutes and texts.
- Trials. Most business phone systems offer a free trial, then charge per user.
- Inactivity. Free numbers can be taken back if you stop using them, which is a real risk for a number printed on your van.
- Carrier fees nobody can waive. If you text customers from a US local number, A2P 10DLC registration has a one-time brand fee, a campaign review fee and a monthly campaign fee, charged by the carriers through whatever app you use. Linxi's figures are on its A2P campaign help page.
A free app is a reasonable way to start. Before you print the number anywhere, check whether you can move it to a paid provider later without losing it.
Business phone number providers: who actually owns the number
Business phone number providers come in layers, and knowing which layer you are dealing with explains most of the fine print.
- The mobile carriers (such as Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile) run the networks that deliver calls and texts to phones.
- Number and network providers (such as Twilio, Telnyx and Bandwidth) hold phone numbers and connect them to the carriers. Developers and software companies build on them.
- The app you use sits on top. Sometimes the app company is also the number provider; often it rents numbers from one of the providers above.
In the US, you generally have the right to keep your number when you change providers, which is called number porting. In practice you need the account number and a port-out PIN or authorization from your current provider, and the port can take days. Free and consumer apps vary on whether they allow it, so check before you rely on one.
Texting customers from a second number: the rules
Calls have few rules for a small business. Texts have many, and they apply whichever app you choose.
- A2P 10DLC registration. In the US, business texts from a regular 10-digit local number must be registered with The Campaign Registry: a Brand (who you are) and a Campaign (what you send and how people opted in). Unregistered business texts are blocked by the carriers. Our full guide to A2P 10DLC registration covers it step by step, and Linxi's A2P brand and A2P campaign help pages show every field.
- Toll-free verification. Toll-free numbers skip A2P 10DLC but have their own verification before they can text.
- Opt-in and opt-out. Text only people who agreed to hear from you, name your business, and honor STOP. The opt-in requirements page shows what reviewers expect for each way of collecting consent.
A second-line app is not a bulk-texting tool
Sending the same promotion to hundreds of customers from a personal-style app breaks carrier rules for business messaging, even if the app lets you paste the list. Messages get filtered and the number can be blocked. Use a platform that registers your traffic.
Where Linxi fits as a second business number
Linxi is a texting-first platform. You can search real local numbers by area code, or by digits the number starts with, contains or ends with, and buy one inside the app. A Linxi-managed number is $1.50 a month for a local number ($2.50 for toll-free), the first number is included on paid plans, and Linxi files the A2P registration for you from the business details you give in the number wizard. Texts are billed at the carrier's own rate with no markup ($0.0040 per SMS segment on Telnyx), plus a 2.9% fee when you add funds. If you already have a Twilio or Telnyx account, you can connect it and keep your numbers.
Texts, picture messages, email and Linxi Network messages from the same person sit in one thread, with contacts, opt-in records and campaigns alongside. Linxi works in the browser and installs from the browser on a phone.
One honest note about Linxi today: it does not take or place phone calls yet. Calling is coming, but if your second number has to ring, pair a calling app with a Linxi texting number, or wait. Details are on the messaging features page and the buy a number guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have two phone numbers on one phone?
Yes. You can add a second line from your carrier using a second SIM or an eSIM, if your phone supports two lines, or install a second phone number app that gives you a VoIP number. The carrier line works without data and behaves like a normal mobile number. The app works over data or Wi-Fi and is easier to share with a team or use on a computer.
Is Google Voice free for business?
The personal version of Google Voice is free in the US, but it is meant for individual use. For a business, Google offers Google Voice for Google Workspace, which is charged per user on top of a Workspace subscription. Check Google's current pricing, because the tiers and prices change.
Is a second phone number app the same as a virtual phone number?
Mostly, yes. A virtual phone number is a number that is not tied to one SIM card or phone line, and second phone number apps almost always give you one. The word "virtual" just means the calls and texts are routed over the internet to an app, rather than to a particular handset.
Can I keep my business number if I switch apps?
Usually, if the provider allows porting. In the US you generally have the right to move a number to a new provider, and you will need your account number and a port-out PIN or authorization from the old one. Some free apps restrict this, so confirm it before you print the number anywhere.
Should my second business number be local or toll-free?
A local number suits a business that serves its own area: people recognize the area code and are more likely to answer or reply. A toll-free number suits a business that sells nationally and wants one number everywhere. Both can text, but a local number needs A2P 10DLC registration and a toll-free number needs toll-free verification first.
Can I text my customers from a second number app?
You can text customers who opted in, but US carriers require business texts from a local number to be registered under A2P 10DLC, or they are blocked. Many second-line apps are built for one-to-one conversations and do not help with registration or opt-outs. For reminders, confirmations or campaigns, use a platform that registers your number and records consent.
Do second phone number apps work without Wi-Fi?
They need an internet connection, but mobile data counts, so they work anywhere your phone has a data signal. Some apps can forward calls to your regular mobile number when data is weak. A second line from your carrier, through a SIM or eSIM, is the option that works without data at all.
Can I use a second number app for verification codes?
Sometimes not. Many banks, payment apps and online services refuse virtual or VoIP numbers for sign-in codes, to cut down on fraud. If you need a number for account verification, a carrier line is more reliable than an app number.
How much does a second business phone number cost?
It ranges from free (personal apps, often with ads or limits) to a monthly fee per user for business phone systems. Texting adds carrier costs: per-message charges plus A2P 10DLC registration fees. On Linxi, a managed local number is $1.50 a month, the first one is included on paid plans, and texts are charged at carrier cost; the pricing page lists every figure.
Can my whole team use one business number?
Yes, with the right app. Business phone systems and texting platforms let several people see and answer the same number's calls or messages. Consumer second-line apps and carrier lines are usually tied to one person's phone, so they are a poor fit for a shared front desk.
